BioPRYN blood pregnancy testing for cattle, goats & sheep

Precision Diagnostics has run BioPRYN tests since 2006 — more than 1.6 million samples for producers in 38 states. BioPRYN finds open animals early with a simple blood draw, so you can rebreed, cull or regroup sooner.

BioPRYN for cattle

28+ days after breeding, 90+ days after calving

BioPRYN for goats

BioPRYN for sheep

30+ days after breeding

How BioPRYN works

The placenta of a pregnant ruminant releases Pregnancy-Specific Protein B (PSPB) into the blood. BioPRYN is an ELISA test that measures PSPB in a small blood sample. It needs no ultrasound or rectal palpation, can be drawn by the producer at chute-side, and gives a clear pregnant or open result.

    BioPRYN questions

    What is BioPRYN?

BioPRYN is a blood-based pregnancy test for ruminants. It detects Pregnancy-Specific Protein B (PSPB), a protein made by the placenta, in a small blood sample. If PSPB is present above the threshold, the animal is reported pregnant; if not, open.

When can I BioPRYN test my cows?

Cattle can be tested 28 days or more after breeding. Because PSPB stays in the blood for a while after calving, cows should also be at least 90 days past calving before testing.

When can I test goats and sheep?

Does and ewes can be tested 30 days or more after breeding (or after the buck or ram is removed).

    What sample does BioPRYN need?

About 2 cc of whole blood in a red-top tube, labeled with the animal ID and sent with a completed submission form. No refrigeration is needed for normal shipping times.

How fast do I get results?

Samples received at our New Holland, PA lab before 10:30 AM are usually reported the same day by email, and released results are always available in the farmer portal.

When can I drop off BioPRYN samples?

You can ship samples by USPS, FedEx or UPS, or drop them at one of our local kit locations. See the shipping page for addresses and cut-off times.

How much does a BioPRYN test kit cost?

Blood draw kits start at $15 for 10 animals, with 20, 50 and 100-head kits available in our online shop.
